Ingredients
  

Gingerbread House

  • ¼ c water
  • ½ c butter
  • ½ c brown sugar
  • ½ c dark molasses
  • 3½ c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ginger
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

Royal Icing

  • 4 tbsp shortening
  • ¼ tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
  • 3 c powdered sugar
  • 5 tbsp warm milk

Instructions
 

Gingerbread

  • Preheat oven to 375℉ (190℃)
  • Boil water and pour over butter in a bowl.
    ¼ c water, ½ c butter
  • Mix in brown sugar and molasses.
    ½ c brown sugar, ½ c dark molasses
  • Sift together dry ingredients.
    3½ c all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp ginger, ½ tsp nutmeg, ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • Mix dry ingredients with the molasses mixture.
  • Chill the dough.
  • Roll out dough to ¼" thickness and cut into desired shapes.
  • Bake on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper for 12-14 minutes.

Royal Icing

  • Blend all ingredients and store the mixture in an air-tight container.
    4 tbsp shortening, ¼ tbsp salt, 1 tsp peppermint extract, 3 c powdered sugar, 5 tbsp warm milk
